Aging-in-place features ... higher profile as baby boomers get older

A headline in the real estate section of the Washington Post   caught my eye this morning. It read," ‘Aging-in-place’ features for the home gain higher profile as baby boomers get older.

Real Estate Market Trends- Boomers Aging-in-Place

" According to the article, the new home of a "boomer" couple was " built to accommodate couple as they age" and  included a few features I've been highlighting in the Active Rain series (you can read the entire Active Rain series in the Aging-in-Place Group) - — including an elevator, wide doorways to accommodate a wheelchair and a flat, no-step entryway.

Planning a Place ot Live

Any number of our colleagues over at The Sage Companion Project have been focused on the wisdom of planning a place to live. We have noted that Post-50-People aging-in-place design choices are gaining popularity and an uptick in demand .According to AARP, the up to 80 percent  prefer to stay in our homes and live independently. “ This demographic change translates into demand for residential designs that anticipate changes in health, vision or mobility, and ensures that homes stay safe, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing."

Kudos to our forward-thinking Asheville, NC real estate team.

Always with a good eye to the future, our age-friendly consulting team here in Asheville specializes in accessible multi-generational and universal design homes situated thoughtfully on amazing land. We love the idea of  accessibility for all. This adds up to sustainable excellence with no sacrifice in style. The most visible result of aging-in-place design is living space that simply feels more spacious, but we have pinpointed six (6) features in our eBooklet entitled, Aging-in-PaLaCE" (available on Kindle) .

Six Features for Sustainable Excellence at Home- or Aging in PaLaCE

Here's  a quick-start DIY Guide for our clients (and yours, if you'd like)- It brings to the fore the value of pre-planning whether our clients are building a new eco-friendly home or remodeling. Here are six elements to consider:

1) abundant lighting,

2) lever-style door handles,

3) well-located storage,

4) chair-height toilets,

5) slip-resistant flooring

6) open plans with plenty of circulation space.
