Asheville’s Organic Growers School and Conference

I am looking forward to March and Asheville’s  Organic Growers School Conference. The Organic Growers School seeks to advance organic agriculture and sustainable living in our beautiful region. Each year since the early 1990s people have gathered to teach, learn and celebrate together. At first, they  discussed the need for nuts and bolts, region-specific crop growing information applicable for farmers in Western North Carolina.  But soon, OGS was born, along with a mission to deliver practical information about organic agriculture at a reasonable price.

“We envisioned a mutually supportive network of thriving communities and prosperous farmers throughout the Southern Appalachians,” they explained. “ Since then 1906 farmers, gardeners, educators, students, consumers, and chefs  have gathered from over 18 states and Canada, making the OGS Spring Conference the largest event of it’s type in the Southeast.

Since  2012, OGS folks have been working in conjunction with residents of a public housing development in Asheville NC. The goal is to plan and implement an expansion of the community garden. The current community garden is 400 square feet and is used to produce healthy, fresh food for the community's residents.
