I am a big advocate for SMART Growth... but I am astonished at how the same people that protest growth in any way, are the ones that a) will benefit from it most and b) protest the problems that exist from the lack of growth.

One issue currently in Boynton Beach, Florida is a residential community that was built very near an Industrial Park... residents are clammoring for the city to spend millions rerouting trucks and heavy equipment away from their development.  The cost to the city AND the businesses would be enormous.  Why shouldn't they just be the ones to drive through a different way?  Why aren't they telling their kids not to run and play in the path of Semis?  And why would they protest something that was there long before they were??  Finally - the industrial space brings MANY jobs and MUCH tax revenue to the area - which builds the amenities for them in the opposite direction of the Industry!

Smart development includes all types of property... they support the macrocosm of a community.

Thanks for your interest in Asheville. It's a vibrant place with a vocal citizenry. One of our big issues is steep slope development. You can get a copy of the latest proposed landscape ordinance on the City Council agenda web page.

Very interesting - I wouldn't have guessed that was a key issue (not having actually been there)...

JaneAnn,

The city of Asheville is so blessed with its combination of nature and community that I barely begin to know how to tell you how much I enjoyed my visit to your city. You all have managed to achieve what so many communities hunger for: an authentic downtown with an identity that is uniquely yours. And the community is the best attraction of all. I felt welcomed by the city in a way that is a rare experience for an outsider consultant like me; it was like visitng old friends again.

Y'all keep it up--you're on the right track.

Cheers from Portland,

Ed

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

This comment, especially coming from YOU, is wonderful to read. We recommended to our Mayor Bellamy (who actually talks with and listens to us) that we look to PORTLAND for consulting advice. I suspect she took us up on our suggestion as per your note! PLEASE let us know the next time you come to Asheville. We are so happy you came, saw and advised us of your perceptions.

Everyone~ ...just FYI...

Edward Starkie examined Smart growth financing for Oregon's Smart Development Committee and in this article examines the real estate finance industry in Oregon, identifies problems and offers possible solutions. What they learned in Oregon is applicable in most parts of the United States. The solutions aren't easy but they can be done.("Copyright 1997 Leland Consulting Group. Asheville is on the Top 10 List of Desirable Cities in which to live/settle/retire/have a life...so we are focusing on how to enjoy the benefits of our desirability while also keeping what makes us so attractive honored and nurtured....Smart Growth is one way we can do this...(we hope)

JaneAnne, how did this go?  I just found this post...did you post about it after?

janeAnne,

It's good to see cities like Asheville in the forefront of this type of progressive thinking. No wonder Asheville ranks high on several surveys about desirable places to live in. Two areas that stand out in the discussion agenda are the re-use of historic places and the pedestrian-oriented urban development. Good news.

It went well...although I have to say, that we always have visionaries and we also always have money-changing-handers...no matter where we are...(I think that is just human nature)...(and take a look at what Ed S. says in a comment or tow up for  another opinion!)...I love the idea of stewardship...and smart planning is part of that...learning from other cities where a smart growth plan is actually working is a GREAT idea...

You mentioned..."Two areas that stand out in the discussion agenda are the re-use of historic places and the pedestrian-oriented urban development. Good news...." I just want to say, I couldn't agree more.  We are now even working to plan and execute bike-ways...I can just see a  bicycle trail/path/down by the River.
