Ever since I participated in a site evaluation of a Green-Built home, where
I first experienced the luster of concrete flooring, I have been fascinated with the possibilities for concrete in residential properties.
Because the home that was being evaluated was complying with HealthyBuilt standards, the concrete used did not generate significant volumes of carbon dioxide (CO2.)
CO2 contributes significantly to greenhouse gas. In this application, the builder carefully had selected concrete the substitutes of fly ash and slag.
What else makes concrete a "green" product?
1.Concrete flooring provides high durability.
2. Concrete flooring is less subject to biological contamination problems.

For buyers and sellers of properties who are thinking about smart residential renovations we are excited about the various types of flooring they may choose to install. Bamboo? Cork? Recycled Hardwood? In terms of environmentally responsible choices, particularly in our indoor environment, for our own home, we are leaning towards concrete as we discuss the topic around the kitchen table.

I love concrete flooring. Especially if it includes a slight slope toward a drain. Nothing like being able to hose out your living room. Can you tell that I have both kids and dogs?
One of the homes I saw using this on HGTV had concrete kitchen counters. It looked fabulous. I'm thinking of bamboo in my own home as I'm wanting to replace my greatroom flooring in the next year.
janeAnne, It's so interesting to read about concrete and the different types of it...something I hadn't considered. I would LOVE my next home to be built 'Green." There are so many toxins in everything, I would love to live in a healthy home.
janeAnne, I first saw concrete flooring in a local mall many years ago. They had polished that thing til it shone like marble. I'm thinking though that the chemicals they used for the stains weren't so green. Like Carole, I too would love the opportunity to go green from the ground up.

I am laughing and smiling and nodding my head. I have two dogs and lots of visitors with muddy feet.

Be sure to let me know if you decide to go with concrete. I have a collection of photos with incredible designs and some good contacts for artisans in concrete.
Carole~
Asheville, as you may know, is the "Hub of Green"...so we get to experience state-of-the-art pro ducts and processes. Possibly consider a trip to North Carolina (??)
Maggie~
Great to hear from you. I am exploring what a local manufacturer of NON-toxic paints and finishes. I will be doing a post about what I find. And going green makes sense, I agree.
