Asheville NC'sLEED Certified Blue Ridge Parkway Center and the Green Roof (see photo) made us self-admitted Roof Nuts. We became intrigued with the concept and fascinated with possibilities. Now we talk
about:
- Roof Color. Take, for example, the color of the roof. It's pretty much common knowledge that a lighter-colored roof reflects more heat than a dark-colored roof. That's a good-to-know if you are into energy efficiency.
- Stormwater Runoff. When it rains, stormwater runoff can flow over impervious surfaces picking up pollutants along the way and washing them into rivers and streams, and can cause flooding and erosion. Creating an "EcoRoof" can reduce and filters stormwater runoff.
- Skylights. Green building and remodeling emphasizes the benefits of natural lighting, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency. And skylights let in natural light which is great for daylighting and energy efficiency. We are all for free, healthful natural light and ventilation, a sense of spaciousness-that open feeling.
- The "Lucky" Green Roof. You have probably heard of Green Roofs. According to Wikipedia, "A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems." Green roofs offer a wide array of public and private benefits including food production, charming outdoor spaces, oxygen production, building insulation, heat absorption, and water filtration.
But do you know what goes into creating a Green Roof ? Have you ever walked on one ... even seen one up close? If not, stay tuned for Part 2 of this series due to arrive on St. Patrick's Day....but watchout...you may become a "Roof Nut," too...

Oh Goodie!! I have been collecting videos. I think you will enjoy my FAVES...
janeAnne, I can't wait to read the rest of this story. How very interesting!
janeAnne, I like to think I'm a little educated on this subject but I actually have no idea what goes into a Green Roof! I hadn't even thought of it...I'll be back to check, I'd like to learn.
janeAnne,
Beautiful roof...I'm imagining it covered in tiny blue flowers. Looking forward to reading part 2!
Jo
janeAnne, I've seen green roofs - and some were unintentional - and I really like to know how the roof structure is protected from water and root invasion. Can't wait!
Connie~ Remind me to tell you about the First Green Roof I ever say!
Carole~ The idea that a green roof is also "green" kind of intrigues me....you'll see what I mean on Mar 17 =)
Jo~ Don't you love the idea of a Green Roof being blue??
Silvia~ Now there's a thought...the unintentional green roof...not the one I'll be showing y'all on March 17th...
Janeanne I have actually never seen a green roof until now. I actually though you were joking at 1st. Very interesting!
Bill~
