Has Green REALLY Gone Mainstream?

Green  Gone Mainstreamgreen construction - new home- Asheville NC
Asheville Real Estate Journal

Sustainable innovation:

Smaller footprints, daylighting , snug building shells, Energy Star ®appliances, no/low VOC paints and adhesives, rainwater harvesting...and the going green list goes on with features that are touted as good for your health and pocketbook...and even the future of your grandkids.

Is it hype?  Not in Asheville, NC. Here, homes  showcase a clever blossoming of style and common sense stirring the imagination of REALTORS® and our clients alike.

Take, for example our WNC Healthy Built Homes® (see photo I took not too long ago.) These eco-friendly beauties are preferred to traditional homes not only  here in the Greater Asheville area, but all across the USA. In fact. 81% of home buyers say they prefer a green built and/or eco-friendly home.

Possibly "going green"  REALLY has gone mainstream.

Nicely written, very pleasing in all aspects. I think we're getting closer and closer. Certainly more and more buyers interested in Green options.

janeAnne-we are seeing more and more green homes in the Seattle area, yet there are many builders waiting for either legislation, incentives or stronger buyer demand to change. Good stuff, thanks for the post.

Well done. Going green will only go as far as the price will let it. If there are too many barriers to entry people will keep things the way the are.

Going green does not have to be expensive, but it is educating the public. The younger generation seems to get it. Either way with the building codes changing we will have it like it or not.

I agree with Deb. Eloquently written post.

From building green to conserving energy and making wise choices on so many little things throughout our daily lives, we can make a difference for our planet and our grandchildren.

It's absolutely gone mainstream.  When NBC and mainstream media gave it the greenwashing push, it was without a doubt in the mainstream, but I think the trend has begun to take a step or two back recently due to the economy.  A lot less people with extra money or time to get involved in groups like their local USGBC Chapter, green drinks, etc.  Green needs to be repackaged and sold as "this is the right way" to bring in the straight laced, narrow minded into what just makes common sense.

Yes. I am trying to figure out why more realtors haven't taken the time to truly understand environmental building science. It's like selling cars without knowing how the car runs!  Lennar is rolling out an ei green program, very exciting!  KB is offering eph similar to mpg ratingson on cars.  Energy Per Home stickers on each home.  My Ecobroker and GREEN designations are becoming more valuable each day.  I love helping people save money, living healthier, and increasing their home value!

Debb~ I agree with your comment, "...Certainly more and more buyers interested in Green options.." We sure are seeing more and more of this in our already eco-friendly Asheville!

Adrian~Interesting! I will be thinking about your comment, "...many builders waiting for either legislation, incentives or stronger buyer demand to change..."  Here in Asheville...there is so much demand for eco-friendly buildings that the cost differential for green-built is minimal.

John~ Thanks for your comment...and (hopefully) mainstream Green is here to stay...I know it is in Asheville....

David~ As you point out, " ...Going green does not have to be expensive, but it is [all about ] educating the public.

Hi Evan~

It seems that here in Asheville...demand is such , that the (possibly just 25 cent difference in )resulting cost per sq ft. is almost negligible...

I hope so.  I think younger people get it because they have seen the mess we are making with this planet.

I do not think that Green is gone mainstream. Not yet.

However, the next generation of home-buyers, the millennials, believe in green living as a core value. They will seek out communities and homes that support their values as well as the real estate professionals who are attuned to sustainability issues.
