When was the last time you camped in the forest and gazed up through the sentinels, the trees, at the starry sky above?
Here is a photo I took last week while on an assignment for a Land Buyer concerned with light pollution. " Hundreds of millions of lights are poorly designed. They send light up, down, and all around instead of where the light should be directed (toward the ground)." Termed 'light pollution', all those lights wash out the night sky ruining the beauty of the cosmos for all.
Fortunately, many in the Greater Asheville, NC area consider our night skies to be a natural resource and have chosen to utilize energy-efficient fluorescent and /or solar powered outdoor lighting. What distinguishes well-designed outdoor lighting from poorly-designed lighting? Here is a PDF file that details the answers. http://aslc-nm.org/LCLightingCode.pdf

janeAnne - thank you for sharing your "star-gazing" photo and your PDF file with us. There is lots of great information we all can use to improve the state of our lighting. Have a great day.
Elizabeth~
It is quite an amazing experience to gaze up at a sky FULL of natural light...from the Stars! ..one for which, as a conservation land broker, I am most grateful.
I for one am happy that municipalities and others are starting to be conscious of light pollution. Last time camping was 3 years ago and it's past time to get into the mountains again.
Glenn~
I bet folks out there in Washington Stgate appreciate cloudless night skies and visions of Stars as much as we do here in the Asheville area...Here's a PDF file :

janeAnne, again a great post from you and good information about light pollution. Thanks for sharing. I get up to visit my son in Alaska about three times a year...talk about Star gazing. It's amazing.
janeAnne,
I've tried to see this photo several times before on your post and today is the first time I can see it. I'm glad I persisted because it's a beutiful starry night! What a great picture.
I'm sure it had something to do with my computer and I'm glad I got to see it this time. Have a great holiday weekend and may you always have stars to gaze upon.
Patricia
JaneAnne,
This reminded me of how as a child I would gaze at the stars, and what a show,! There were no street light to spoil the view. I so miss those days.
Debb~
I will have to take a midnight shot off my deck in Asheville proper to share with y'all...there is still a chance to see the stars..tho' not like Alaska...one reason why it is a great experience to visit there =)
Patricia~
There seems to have been a glitch with software...thank you SO much for your persistence and comment.
Hi Jennifer! ~
I totally agree. Star-gazing is a nurturing experience not to be denied....
