Asheville and There's MAN in Our ( Green ) Kitchen

Real “Woman-Centric” Appeal?

There’s a MAN in My (GREEN) Kitchen..  Is it You EMERIL?

http://www.emerils.com/

Have you ever watched Emeril grocery shopping?  According to SymphonyIRI* http://www.symphonyiri.com/  current consumer research study of which many buyers, sellers and REALTORS® may be aware: “ …there are several important distinct differences between male and female shoppers [for example, during the recession] men adopted money-saving strategies that point to a deliberate and well thought-out grocery purchase processes ….”

Well! I’m going to invite that man right on over to My Kitchen!  Which reminds me what  Debb Janes’ http://activerain.com/debbjanes     said in Part 2 of this series on woman-centric design choices/ kitchens: “Don't we all love kitchens? The heart of the home in my opinion. My dream kitchen includes a husband (preferably mine) who cleans up after himself. :)”

A Man in My Kitchen! … Here’s what I, Greenolina want to know: Beyond men’s reputed well thought-out grocery purchase processes ….” do guys desire kitchen  features that women desire as per Part 1? ….

a) plenty of storage,

b) nicely situated prep areas

c) space for guests and family to mingle

d) high-end, energy-efficient appliances,

e) gas cooktops and generous refrigerators.

OR shall might we expect more emphasis on implements…sharp knives, standalone stainless steel mincers, and big, big energy efficient subzero refrigerators…and a more “aesthetic balance” when it comes to feminine and masculine decor and design?

OR is this there a certain panache  that changes the atmosphere when there’s a Male in the Kitchen having little to do with “design”?… I asked Andy M  who commented------ in Part 3

The kitchen is the new living room. You spend lots of time getting meals prepared if you enjoy cooking. With everyone pitching in. … dad with four kids … when they are home for summer break, we all pitch in to cut the mushrooms, saute the peppers and make a leisurely meal with tunes on and plenty of communication. Kitchens are more than a place to woof down a meal….”

Alex who just graduated from GW in Washington,” he wrote, “  is home until heading to Colorado for winter job at ski area. He is busy as a bee baking beans, anadama bread and is the best cook of the four although they are all pretty savvy cookers. Not mac and cheese and bolgona and cheese kids.

Further Kitchen advice from Andy: Give them time to work in the kitchen, don't just do all the cooking. Teach them how.  As for design-style… This kitchen is wild hickory with original 1913 ceiling in a federal style home. Has a pantry with original slate sink. It is a working kitchen, not museum Mister Roger's one.

Design Style: More on that coming up in  Part 5 –working title-  “Hot Masculine-Kitchen DESIGNS”

…. during intermission…here’s a bawdy  bit from Public Radio’s Riverwalk Jazz series .(Vocal starts at 1:45)

It’s entitled, “ KITCHEN MAN”… featuring The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and guests—singer Catherine Russell and pianist Dick Hyman at Pearl Stable, San Antonio, TX, May 2010. Band members: Jim Cullum, cornet; Ron Hockett, reeds; Mike Pittsley, trombone; Jim Turner, piano; Howard Elkins, banjo; Ric Ramirez, bass; Mike Waskiewicz, drums

Fun, fun twist janeAnn, I shall pose this question to my husband when he returns home this evening. He's in the kitchen a lot as he loves to cook. It will be fun to get his "take" on this one.

Interesting.  I had never come across a man who was the least bit interested in the design of the kitchen.  Must be something to do with my market :)

My husband  likes our kitchen, and helps cook. If I do the cooking. he will clean up.

Hi janeAnne~ My husband spends plenty of time in the kitchen with projects that include flour and loves extremely sharp knives (sharpening them on a steal is a constant ritual for him!) lots hand towels and counter space, a great oven and his Kitchen Aid.

Love that Jazzy Kitchen Man!...

I look forward to hearing what your husband has to say about this...possibly (maybe even especially) what he thinks about the Video =)

Jane~

Oh my goodness...never one man who had ideas about how to design a kitchen??? You need to move to Asheville TODAY! (I'm smiling) In addition, men in the kitchen often are considered indispensable here...(see video)

Rebecca~

That sounds like a Plan...there are so many moments for caring and sharing...many right as you prepare (or even clean up after) a meal together.

Now your Man in the Kitchen sounds delightful...I can almost picture the knife sharpening ritual...it seems to be one to which men in particular adhere !

WhenI found the Video, "Kitchen Man" I thought it was perfect lighthearted twist for the post...SO GLAD you watched it...

HI JaneAnne - I think there are a lot of husbands and men who enjoy cooking, and have ideas about the layout.

My husband is a chef (trained but only cooking for his 3 special ladies). He's all about functionality and a big pantry! I'm all about the design and decorating = perfect match ;-)

janeAnne,

This is a wonderful post.  Luxkily I have my man in the kitchen for clean up and sous chef activities.  He is wonderful and even sharpens the knives.  By the way, have you ever seen the Porsche designed kitchen for men?  I would be delighted to work in it, with my sous chef, of course.  A

janeAnne, wow, there is a lot of material in this post!  I'll pick up on just one for now, "teach them how".  My parent's house had a rather smallish, galley kitchen.  Nevertheless, my mother made sure to involve us kids in baking, meal preparation, and unfortunately in clean-up as well (we were her dishwashers back then)!  Times have changed!

My husband would get involved with the design but that is as far as it goes, no cooking:)

I have to catchup on the rest of the series.

There are probably men on the planet who have actually thought about the kitchen layout and equipment, I just haven't met one yet.
