Green home today. Industry standard tomorrow- The 2010 Forecast

published by McGraw-Hill , Summer 2006 release,  takes a solid look at the residential green building marketplace in particular.

Indicators that residential green building will escalate
in the next year at a significant rate.
What is considered a green home today, the report notes, will be the industry standard tomorow- in the not so distant future.- say by 2010!

A growth of 30% over 2006 numbers is expected.  More than two-thirds of builders will be building green homes, with only one-third not yet engaged in the marketplace.  Beyond 2007, the sheer number of participants in the green home building market will pull the rest of the market up to green standards just to stay competitive.

A heads-up. I read in the SmartMarket report that  "Green home building supporters should work with REALTORS®, appraisers and other financing institutions to accelerate market penetration of green homes.

This is wonderful news, janeAnne!  The future can't come fast enough when it comes to building green homes.

I've seen the trend, too, janeAnne. That's why I became eco Certified. I look forward to more Green Homes being built, and to the prices for certifying them coming down.

Hi Leanne...There does seem to be a trend in a "healthful" direction, at least in our market here in Asheville. We had only 20  or so GreenBuilt homes last year, and now we are looking at  over 300 in process...

Hi Sharon...LEED certification is expensive, for sure. One Green Builder in our area built one of his homes to the LEEDS specs and had it certified, and has the book which he showed us at our last ECO Agent meeting. He said there were a number more books back at his office, just as fat as that one, too!

Great info Janeanne. In fact if one were smart finding the stocks of companies that build green home products probably would be a good investment!

I notice that there is an increase in interest in green homes in our area. But I don't know if any more green homes are being built. Is there a wayyou could suggest that I could find out?

Our parents are getting old and we would like to have a place they can stay with us but all of our bedrooms are on the second and third floors of the house.  We have a lot we plan on building on and would love to build green.  If anyone in the Lawrence, KS area has info on local builders dedicated to green building please pass it on.

Definitely a good analysis of the trend toward green.  I am sure that this will pan out as homebuyers become more sophisticated about their green needs.

Green building is starting to go mainstream. Builders are still feeling their way into the trend, but it's encouraging to see that so many are doing at least a little bit of it. 30% growth is really good.

JaneAnne - good post. I have read parts of the report but not in it's entirety. Thank you for the synopsis. You are seeing tremendous growth in the green building industry. I would have to believe part of that is because your company is raising awareness in Asheville! Good job on that!

I think another area of focus needs to be on remodeling/updating existing homes much like what you have done with your office. There are great opportunities for the construction trades in upgrades. FYI - USGBC has their  REGREEN guidelines for public comment.
