Homes, Neighborhoods, and Leading Edge Boomers

As an "aging-in-place"- or a "forever home" Referral Specialist, I am always on the lookout for interesting research and/or news. Today I came across a series of videos from "Designing Homes and Neighborhoods for an Aging Population."  This was a 2012 symposium that  brought together professionals and practitioners from multiple disciplines.

The information in the videos referenced here is about Design Solutions for Aging in Place. This includes: Retrofitting existing homes, affordable housing, suburban retrofits, healthy communities, and universal design strategies.  I selected the following VIDEOS  to highlight news you can use.

a) Jack Rowe of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on an Aging Society speaks about "An Aging America" .

b) How can local governments enable adults to afford appropriate housing services and community life as they age in place? A conversation with the Honorable Ron Littlefield, mayor of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Jess Zimbabwe, executive director, Rose Center for Public Leadership.

c) Long Life in the 21st Century with  Laura Carstensen, founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, professor of psychology, Stanford University.

Great information Jane-Anne, thanks for sharing.  I work in several senior communities and I am sure that they, too, will be interested.

  • Very timely information for our aging population.    We have a lot of military retirees living in our area and they are starting to build their homes that they want to live in forever.   Their special needs will become more and more mainstream in the next decade, I think, as they downsize homes and increase amenities.

Those are the coolest labels - "Aging in Place" and "Leading Edge Boomers."  Very timely for the era we dwell in!
