Habitat for Humanity & Community Volunteer REALTOR® Challenge!

I posted an article on Habitat for Humanityand REALTOR® involvement on a home here in the Asheville, N.C. area for which our own Corey Atherton is the point person.

"Through the dedication and energy of a group of real estate professionals
led  by our own Active Rain Member and ECO-All-Star, Corey Atherton
one Family's dream is about to come true , " I wrote.

THREE CHEERS FOR COREY!

We have quite a conversation going on that article, and it has opened up to a CHALLENGE to all real estate and real estate-related professionals!

Here's how the CHALLENGE  came about: This morning I replied to a comment  Ginger Sala, another illustrious ECO-All-Star made...and that got me wondering....

so.... I decided to check out other Habitat Projects in which REALTORS® are involved and/or have volunteered in their  neighborhoods...

Here are a few:

Michigan  --The Michigan Department of Corrections (DOC) and Michigan State Industries (MSI), in an innovative program, are partnering with the state and local Realtor Associations to provide refurbished computers to Habitat-for-Humanity-built homes in Michigan.

Florida ----Habitat for Humanity Orlando will team up with the National Association of Realtors®, the Florida Association of Realtors®, the Orlando Regional Realtors® Association and Habitat for Humanity International on raised a house on Jefferson St.

California- REALTORS® and Habitat for Humanity Building the American Dream

Habitat logoREALTORS® are committed to addressing the need for affordable housing in communities across U.S. and around the world. This year, we continued the tradition of helping one family in the Conference city area realize the American Dream through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity. $10 of your registration fee went towards the sponsorship of a home in Oakland, California and internationally, in Chile.

Seems to me from my short research tour this morning, that real estate professionals contribute in very positive ways in our communities. Habitat for Humanity is just one of those ways. The perception of this contribution may go unnoticed by the general public. ...and that could be remedied.

SO..here's  THE CHALLENGE.  Fill us in on how YOU and/or YOUR  State weighs in!

Habitat for Humanity is a GREAT Organization. I help out with volunteering my time and help as often as I can. Been on many projests all around the country. Helping those that help themselves. I also recommend the H for H stores they have around town to find items. Great deals and helping out H for H.

JaneAnne,
The Asheville Board of Realtors also provides a $100 Ingles Grocery Certificate to each new family when they move in to their new Habitat Home.  This is intended to stock their fridge and let them purchase needed cleaning supplies.  Our Board's hope is to at least co-sponsor a Habitat home each year both financially and with volunteers.  We're wrapping up our first home this month.

I've heard that Realtors in some states pledge a certain monetary sum for Habitat to be taken out of their commissions at each closing.  In turn, these Realtors encourage any one associated with the closings to pledge an amount as well such as the closing attorney, loan officer, appraiser, buyer/seller, etc.

Deborah~

it was a really nice surprise to find you had stopped by and commented today. I am lucky to know many REALTORS who volunteer to help out with habitat  for Humanity. I love the idea of us working together to make a real difference for a family.

Wow Leigh..a Woman Build?  I'd love to hear about that!

JaneAnne  Exit is one of Habitats corporate sponsors..we give $5.00 of every transction to H4H. And with 38,000 agents that adds up!   I can't wait for one to be built a little closer to home!  I know our Corporate office even offered to split the cost of the hotel rooms if we went on the last build, but it was too short of notice.  We will keep an eye on the upcoming ones!

JaneAnne - I'd like to highlight Standale Lumber and Interiors  for their involvement in the Grand Rapids HBA Foundation. The focus of the foundation is support of special housing needs and scholarships for students in the building industry. Habitat for Humanity is one of their projects. Jan Lehman and Clutch Holtvluwer from SLI generously donate their time on the leadership board.

Also, my alma mater, GVSU is active in Habitat for Humanity.Alum were invited and particpated in a build in Allendale, Michigan where the main campus is located, a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I had prior commitments and could not volunteer.

Our family in Brainerd, MN  tears down donated houses and recycles usable lumber, window, appliances. etc for our Habitat for Humanity ReStore.  The $ from the sales help to build new houses.  A Brainerd Habitat unit of retired men go to Florida and help build houses there for the winter.

Kathleen~

I am so glad you added your comment here. We at the ECO-All-Stars Group are putting together a list of valuable resources. It's exciting to me to hear that your family recycles usable lumber from demolished buildings....and gets usable items to Habit for Humanity Stores.  I sure would like to hear more about all this,.

Ask away. People donate their homes and get a tax donation credit or they donate furniture, appliances, left over tile from a project ,whatever  they don't need that is usable and marketable. A lot of the homes come complete with bed, linens. etc It may be a seasonal home and they are building bigger and better. We do have a lot of mansions here on the lakes & a lot of movie and other stars.  They find it easier to just donate than sell etc.

]For the donated homes we tear them to the ground if we get the time frame to do it.  We rescue whatever can go in the store, wood flooring, decorative tiles, carpet, 2x4's, headers, steel beams,  floor joists, etc. The store is mostly manned by volunteers and is open Wed - Sat. and later on Th.

Hi janeAnne -- we do a lot of things in NH -- one of the biggest projects we have undertaken as Realtors (r) in our state is to help local flood victims.  These citizens have not had their stories in the National Press and they are in dire need.  Realtor(r) have helped these victims in many ways.  So that is just one example -- we also help seniors with spring and fall clean-ups which are overwhelming --
