What Dogs Teach Us

. DOGS are wonderful beings.

Each day it seems I learn something new from my canine companions. For instance, on our morning walk down our rural road today. Each time I breathed in the cool almost-Autumn air, there seemed to be a certain freshness. Each familiar boulder, newly covered with dew, looked different.  I noticed each of my breath-clouds in the chilly air. Soon however, my thoughts overtook me and I ended up on a quite another road. Memories of yesterday, and plans for today floated around in my mind like so many bubbles on the pond I visited along the way. And the moment at hand simply disappeared. The DOGS (totally present on their walk) my four-legged companions were more "in-the-moment"   By now, I was probably chastising myself. “I can't believe my computer crashed, I bet I messed it up by doing something I shouldn’t have done. . . I guess I just wasn't paying attention. . .." What’s that about not paying attention? Here, on one of the most beautiful days of the year, I’ve managed to spirit myself away to quite another place. What an odd treachery, this tendency to miss exquisite moments in life.

The DOGS seem to get that life happens right now.
Why is that? I have a theory
. . .to be where we are when we are where we are is just not the natural inclination of the human species!  To be in ready right now to apprehend possibility as it sprints through our daily life is challenging! It's very much like keeping up with the intricacies of the practice of Real Estate. There is something about that dance, the pacing, the process of noticing and selecting involved that leads to a very focused awareness, even during difficult days.

In response to your comments about dogs----also applies to cats: There is so much going on in our lives. It's as if we are living multiple lives simultaneously. Whereas our beloved animals are naturally able to be present in their lives in every moment. There is a quote "It is not important the number of breaths in our lives, but the number of moments that take our breath away".

I lived in Los Angeles most of my life and found myself early one morning on the 405 in rush hour traffic goring as fast as the rest of the vehicles. Then I had this thought: "Where am  I rushing to?". I pulled off onto the shoulder of the road and sat for a few minutes to focus on this thought. Within a few months I had moved into a meditation center to practce focusing my mind and 'being in the moment". The time I lived there was one of the most valuable times in my life and I will always have my 'practice' with me.

As you mention all we need do is observe our dogs and cats to remind ourselves to 'be in the moment'.After all we do live in one of the most beautiful places on our planet.

Sami...Thank yous so much for your thoughtful comment. Not only do we learn to take time out to be where we are when we are there from our special furry pals (dogs and cats) but ...guess what?...I have larned to take myself more lightly...and a myriad other things.

janeAnne I thought of your comments while I was visiting a friend who was having a frustrating day. Not knowing what to do to help her relax I began playing with her cat Kush. Kush is a large 'tuxedo' cat who seems to think he is either a dog or even a person. He enjoys interacting with everyone who visits Ruth. I threw little paper balls to Kush and he batted them back to me for about 5 minutes. Then he turned his back to me and went over to Ruth. He laid his head on her lap and let her know he was there. She noticed him, took a breath and relaxed. I thought "Good job, Kush."

Hi janeAnne,

First of all, I love your dog!  Is it a Papillon?

Thanks for writing such a thoughtful blog - I actually became more aware of 'the moment' just by reading it!  It really IS amazing how dogs live from moment to moment and are happy for little things - like a few minutes of getting an ear scratched, or finding a stick to play with in the backyard.  Like all of God's other creatures, they don't project ahead or spend undue time worrying.  They live for the moment plain and simple.

Hi Val~

Yes he is a Papillon and he thinks he is a German Shepherd! He loves to run out in front of us on the trail and report back in. Hopefully no bears will confront him!!! It has been some time since I wrote and posted this article to my BLOG. But no time at all since I was reminded to be "in the moment" by my dog! I am so glad you found it today, and that it offered you that moment. .
